Imagine, it is shaadi season and you have plenty of weddings to attend. Now you take out your jewellery and see that it’s unwearable. All dark, dirty and tarnished. Panicking? Because even I can imagine the long bills jewellery shops are going to hand over to you to clean your jewellery. And you probably don’t have the time to go buy a jewellery cleaner. Here are some tips to clean your jewellery from the comfort of your home and using resources from your home, courtesy of Shadi Tayari 🙂
1. Dish washing soap for gold
The simple dishwashing soap and warm water can do wonders to clean your jewellery. But make sure that the water is warm, not hot. Otherwise, it can damage the metal surface and even crack the stones. Also use a soft cloth to rub out the grime, with gentle motions. Otherwise, you will scratch the surface or even damage your expensive jewellery piece.
2. Toothbrush and water
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the dirt from the crevices of your jewellery piece. Emphasis on the gentle part. Otherwise, you will loosen all the gems and scratch the surface!
3. Soak and rinse in warm water
Again, WARM water. Please, do not use hot water. You will burn your hands off and ruin your investment pieces.
4. Ammonia
You should only use ammonia as a means of deep-cleaning. Do not overuse it and do not use it very often. Ammonia will make your jewellery look new again. Don’t forget to dilute the solution. One part ammonia to six parts water. Come on, repeat after me. One part ammonia to six parts water. And do not soak it in for more than a minute. That’s all you need.
5. Wet cloth
Add in just a tiny bit of soap, just little bit. This is best for jewellery with glued-in gems. It won’t loosen the glue as there is just enough water involved to clean it.
6. Toothpaste
It does the job just perfectly. But you have to be very careful. Do not scrub vigorously and do not use a hard-bristled toothbrush.
7. Salt bath
It is perfect for silver items. It works just like an exfoliator works for the skin. Takes off the dead skin, or in this case tarnishing, right off.
May your smiles forever shine bright, just like your jewellery 😀
