The rishta nightmare starts the moment your mom screams with excitement, announcing the upcoming rishta. She goes on telling everyone in the house about some auntie is coming for a rishta.
All day long you keep hearing the excited chatter about “rishtey waaley aarey hein” and that’s where your nightmare starts!
Once the rishta news gets spread around your house like grass fire, everyone starts teaching you what you must know before you are being presented in front of the rishtey waaley. The process starts with endless discussions on how to sit, how to talk, how to behave, how to smile and many more hows… To spare you from all the hows and whys, we at Shadi Tayari, have a list of things that you must know before the rishtey waaley come, so that your mom doesn’t have to scold you on every single little thing.
DO’S
We have picked the things that you must definitely do when you are being presented in front of the rishtey waaley. All eyes will be on YOU, so you gotta be very careful…
1- SHOWER
You should take a shower in the morning of the day when the rishtey have to come, or you can have a shower one day before that special day. Having a shower is important as it will keep you fresh. Don’t skip washing your hair as oily hair would look really bad, specially on that day.
2- DRESS WELL
On the special day, you should dress up well. Wear trendy clothes. Pastel shades are preferred over the dark ones. You should NOT wear western clothes. You should only wear a proper dress with shalwar, kameez and dupatta.
When it comes to makeup, don’t overdo it. Wear light makeup as it will make you look elegant.
Tieing your hair and keeping them away from your face is a better option, but if you want to open them up, then go ahead.
Do NOT wear a lot of makeup and please do not dress up like a bride!
3- PERFUME
Please wear a light hint of perfume as you wouldn’t want to stink while you hug the aunties from the rishta party. No, NOT the guy… It’s definitely not happening!
5- KEEP CALM
You should try to keep calm while you’re in front of them. You shouldn’t let the excitement of “OMG, I’m being rishtaofied” come on your face. So keep calm and you’ll do great!
6- SMILE
All you gotta do is smile politely on everything that they say. A big bright smile will be your best friend during the scrutiny.
7- TALK TO THE AUNTIES ONLY
You just have to talk to the aunties of the rishta party. You don’t have to start a conversation with the uncles and definitely NOT the guy!
8- SERVE THEM
Girls, you should learn how to pour tea in a cup. If you spill it on the saucer, you are dead to them!
9- EXCUSE YOURSELF
To show that you are the sharmeeli larki that they want, you should excuse yourself from the conversation and leave the room politely.
DON’TS
Well, there are somethings that you shouldn’t do under ANY circumstances… NO, YOU SHOULD’NT!
1- DON’T SLOUCH
Do NOT slouch!
Keep your back straight, head held slightly down and there you go, you look perfect for the scrutiny.
2- DON’T TALK TOO MUCH
You don’t have to chatter in front of them. Just answer their questions politely and make the answers short. Don’t start talking on your own. If they talk to you, then talk to them.
3- DON’T LAUGH
You don’t have to LOL in front of the rishtey waaley… Also, LMAO, LMFAO, ROFL etc are strictly forbidden to use!
4- DON’T EAT
You can eat after the guests are gone… That’s what we are taught since our childhood. Keep that up when the rishtey waaley come!
5- DON’T STARE AT THE GUY
DO NOT STARE AT THE GUY!!!
If you do, you’ll get death stares from you would-be-saas and horrifying stares from your parents. So avoid looking at the guy altogether. You wouldn’t want to get caught in the act of staring at him.
